Simons Town Beaches
Simonstown is nestled on the False Bay coastline within easy distance of Cape Town. False Bay is the largest true bay in South Africa; the coastline is approximately 30 kilometres in extent with many sheltered inlets and glorious beaches. The False Bay coastline is generally quieter and more laid-back than the trendy Atlantic beaches, but in peak-season these beaches too are very busy with holidaymakers. There are loads of beaches to choose from and you'll need a bit of inside info to end up on the right one.
Boulders Beach
Boulders beach is located a few kilometers to the south of Simon's Town and is the most serene swimming beach in Cape Town. The huge boulders create shelter from the wind, and swimmer often share the water with the resident penguins. There has been a colony of African Penguins at Boulders Beach since 1985.
Windmill Beach
Windmill beach is located past Boulders beach. This beach is another gloriously sheltered flat beach, which gently slopes. The shallow water is ideal for families, and offers an excellent diving and snorkelling spot. The beach is also used for a launching place for powerboats.
Foxy Beach
Foxy Beach has one of only two land-based penguin colonies in the world. The non- swimming beach offers a special walkway and visitor boardwalk for close-range viewing of the African penguin in its natural habitat. To access this beach a small entry fee is required; monies received goes towards the Penguin research programmes.
Seaforth Beach
The gorgeous secluded beach of Seaforth is located just around the corner from the famed penguin colony at Boulders beach. Seaforth Beach is a family beach with a natural bay for swimming and grassy slopes for picnicking. In high season, the number of people allowed on the beach is limited and it is a pay for entry beach
Glencairn Beach
Glencairn Beach is a quaint little beach. The white, sandy beach is great for swimming and sunbathing in the quiet and peaceful surrounds. The water is usually a pleasant swimming temperature and the waves are quite small which ideal for leisurely swimming. Often Beachgoers can view the sailing regattas from across the bay. The beach is ideal for body boarding and kite surfing. Popular amongst divers, there is a wreck located about 450 metres off the Glencairn quarry.
St James tidal pool beach
St James beach is famous for the colourful beach houses which are used as changing rooms; the small beach has a charming tidal pool, which is great for children.
Fish Hoek Beach
Fish Hoek Beach is a far stretching beach, popular with families for the space to spread out. It is situated in a well known residential area which was used as a trading post a century ago. Fish Hoek's picturesque location in a cove offers one of the more sheltered and safer Cape Town beaches, with convenient access by road or train. There is a playground for the kids, and refreshment facilities close by.
Muizenberg Beach
Muizenberg is one of the Cape Town’s most popular family beaches. The Water is ideal for swimming, yet the winds can get relatively strong at times. Muizenberg is a popular surfing spot because of the long beach break. The beach is extremely long offering plenty of space for fun and games and facilities are good. This well loved beach features offers a pavilion, putt putt course, swimming pool and water slides.
